Discover Ancient Christian Shrines and Antiquity's Mysteries
Embark on a journey for those intrigued by ancient Christian shrines and the enigmatic world of antiquity. Our expedition commences with a visit to the ancient Lycian city of Myra, whose remnants lie near modern-day Demre. 🏛️🌍
Myra, renowned as a sacred pilgrimage site and a beacon of holy faith, stands as the dwelling and preaching place of Saint Nicholas. Its founding date remains shrouded in time; however, Lycian inscriptions suggest its presence as early as the fifth century BC. Once a thriving Lycian capital, Myra was among the largest cities in Lycia. The Church of St. Nicholas within it is recognized as the third most significant Byzantine religious structure in the East. Inside, well-preserved icons, frescoes, mosaic floors, and a sarcophagus reside, alongside the enduring relics of Saint Nicholas. Yet, the saint's relics were transferred to Bari, Italy, long ago. 🕌🎨
Today, the church operates as a museum, except on December 6, Saint Nicholas's feast day, when Christian pilgrims gather for worship. Atop the encircling cliffs, a necropolis stands with numerous Lycian rock tombs. Lycians believed higher burials led the departed closer to the heavens, aiding their journey to paradise.
Nearby, a grand Greco-Roman amphitheater rests, accommodating up to 10,000 attendees. This amphitheater witnessed not only theatrical performances but also sacrifices, public trials, executions, and gladiatorial contests. ⚔️🎭
The journey takes a turn to the sunken cities of Kekova island, a pinnacle of beauty and history. Cruising around the island, the remains of four ancient cities come into view: Teimussa, Dolihiste, Aperlai, and Simena. Gazing upon these submerged remnants unveils the secrets of civilizations long past, painting a vivid picture of life in antiquity. 🏛️⛵
